What Is OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is both a VPN protocol and software that uses VPN techniques to secure point-to-point and site-to-site connections. Currently, itโ€™s one of the most popular VPN protocols among VPN users.

Prerequisites

  • Openvpn.
  • OpenVPN dependencies i.e network manager.
  • The user must be present on OpenVPN.
sudo apt install openvpn network-manager-openvpn
sudo apt install network-manager-openvpn-gnome
sudo service network-manager restart

To connect to an OpenVPN server in Linux using a graphical user interface (GUI), you will need to install a client application that supports OpenVPN connections. Several options are available, including the official OpenVPN client and third-party applications such as Network Manager and OpenVPN GUI.

Once you have installed the client application of your choice, you can use it to set up and manage your OpenVPN connections. Here are the general steps to follow:

  1. Launch the OpenVPN client application.
  2. Click on the โ€œAdd a VPN connectionโ€ button (or similar) to create a new connection profile.

Click the Add (+) button below the title VPN and move on to the next step.

The Add VPN window will pop up, click on the drop-down menu and select Import from fileโ€ฆ tab.

Enter the required information for your VPN connection, including the server address, username and password (if needed), and other required details.

Save the connection profile.

Click on the connection profile to connect to the VPN server.

The exact steps may vary depending on the client application you are using. Consult the documentation for the specific application for more detailed instructions.
